Spoštovani popotnik

Stojiš pred podružnično cerkvijo sv. Janeza Krstnika v Spodnji Besnici, ki spada v župnijo
Besnica.
prezbiterij. Leta 1755 so prizidali zakristijo in zvonik. Prvotno je imela cerkev raven strop, ki
so ga leta 1843 zamenjali z banjastim obokom.
Cerkev je kulturni spomenik s starodavnimi freskami in baročnimi oltarji. Glavni “zlati” oltar s
Umetnostni zgodovinarji ji pripisujejo čas nastanka okrog
leta 1470 in je edini ostanek nekdanjega gotskega oltarja.
Stranski oltar sv. Družine je iz leta 1666, drugi, posvečeni sv. Križu, pa je iz začetka 18.
stoletja.
Podobe križevega pota sodijo v Layerjevo podobarsko delavnico in imajo napise v
staroslovenščini.
Želimo ti lepo počutje v naših krajih.

Dear Traveller,

You are standing in front of the branch church of St John the Baptist in Spodnja Besnica,
which belongs to the Parish of Besnica. The Parish of Besnica is part of the Deanery of Kranj,
which in turn belongs to the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.
The church was first mentioned in 1456 in a letter written by Bishop Ivan of Freising. It is
mentioned again about a century later, when, on Midsummer’s Day, 24 th June 1542, Bishop
Frančišek Kazijanar of Ljubljana visited Spodnja Besnica and consecrated the church.
The church was built in the Gothic style, as evidenced by the vaulted and painted Gothic
chancel, which has been preserved to this day. In 1755, a sacristy and a bell tower were
added. The church originally had a flat ceiling, which was replaced with a barrel vault in
1843.
The church is a protected cultural monument featuring ancient frescoes and Baroque altars.
The main “golden” altar, dating from 1697, features a painting of St John the Baptist by
Marko Layer, the father of the better-known Leopold Layer, who painted the famous image
of Mary Help of Christians in Brezje.
Preserved from the original Gothic altar is a sculpture of the head of St John the Baptist on a
platter. Art historians date it to around 1470. It is the only surviving remnant of the former
Gothic altar.
The side altar dedicated to the Holy Family dates from 1666, while the other, dedicated to
the Holy Cross, dates from the early 18th century.
The Stations of the Cross belong to the artistic workshop of the Layer family and bear
inscriptions in Old Slovenian.
We wish you a pleasant stay in our region.

Liebe Besucherin, lieber Besucher!
